What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a paid training programme that combines real work experience with structured learning. Apprentices work for an employer while studying towards a nationally recognised qualification, gaining practical skills in a real job environment. This means you can earn a wage, develop career-ready abilities, and build professional experience all at the same time.

How Apprenticeships Work
Apprentices spend most of their time working on the job, with regular learning sessions delivered by a training provider. The programme includes guided learning, practical training, and ongoing support to help apprentices meet the required standards. Throughout the apprenticeship, progress is monitored through assignments, assessments, and workplace observations, ensuring the apprentice is developing the skills needed for their chosen career.
At the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices take an End Point Assessment (EPA). This is a final, independent assessment that confirms the apprentice has met the required industry standards. The EPA can include a combination of tests such as practical demonstrations, professional discussions, interviews, or written exams. Successfully passing the EPA results in a nationally recognised qualification and certification.
What Does It Cost?
For apprentices aged under 19, apprenticeship training is fully funded, meaning there is no cost to the apprentice. For apprentices aged 19 and over, the government covers the majority of training costs, with the employer typically contributing only 5% of the total training cost. Apprentices also earn a wage throughout the programme, making apprenticeships an accessible and practical route into a career.
Advanced Prior Learning (APL)
APL is a way for experienced staff to have their existing skills, knowledge, and workplace experience recognised when starting an apprenticeship. Rather than repeating learning they already understand, APL allows individuals to provide evidence—such as previous qualifications, work records, or performance reviews—to demonstrate competence in certain areas of the apprenticeship standard. When approved, this can reduce the amount of training required and help experienced employees progress more quickly through the programme, while still ensuring they meet the full apprenticeship requirements and complete the final End Point Assessment (EPA).
